Too often relevant feedback about our performance is lacking. Because our work can be such a private affair, we often lack the context to work collaboratively at improving our craft. Most of the time, instead of seeking feedback from others about our work and the interaction process in our engagement with whānau, we spend our time talking about whānau, and not 'analysing our game'.

As practitioners we don't receive the constant pressure from performing in front of an audience of paying ticket holders, like actors, musicians, and athletes. The lack of scrutiny and perhaps feedback may be an important difference that explains why many doctors do not spontaneously adopt the best practice methods for treating their patients, and spend a rather modest amount of time engaged in deliberate practice and effortful training to improve and maintain their skills...

The greatest obstacle for deliberate practice during work is the lack of immediate objective feedback.

Feed-Up: Where am I going? (What are the goals?)

Feed-Back: How am I going? (What progress is being made toward the goal?), and

Feed-Forward: Where to next? (What activities need to be undertaken to make better progress?)

1. The feedback process occurs right at the start of the deliberate practice framework (Feed Up).

2. The role of a coach is crucial to the mix.

3. Record yourself in action. By doing so, discussions that follow will be based on actual review and reflection of the process, as opposed to a reliance on biased recall and heavy theoretical meaning-making.

4. You and your coach can discuss the Feed Forward process of identifying learning activities that can help to take steps towards improvement in the specified area of how you run your first wānanga.

We need transparency within our work in order to push our effectiveness to the next level.

You have a new whānau you are about to meet. You have 5 sessions with them. For each session you will be rated on your ability to establish a safe space for the whānau to provide feedback. If you respond appropriately then you will gain time and the whānau will respond. If you don't then the whānau do not return.
